Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the most pleasantly surprising overnight trips I’ve ever had! It’s a charming little city that sits in Southern Bosnia. It’s most famous for the Stari Most, which is a Medieval Arched bridge which sits in the center of the city. The bridge is surrounded by little shops and restaurants. The country of Bosnia and Herzegovina is considered part of the Balkans and it borders Croatia, Montenegro, and Serbia. It’s the perfect place to add on to your own Balkans tour! The Best Time to Travel to Mostar, Bosnia
Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina is a small charming city. I recommend only staying one night here because of it’s size. We tacked it on to our last Balkans tour that we took in September 2018. We decided to take our vacation in September because the European cities get very packed mid summer. The tourist season slows down, prices drop, and the weather is still warm in September. It’s a perfect time to travel to most European cities. I added a link to our 3 Nights Croatia – Dubrovnik, Hvar Blog if you are looking for more Balkan cities.

Transportation in Mostar, Bosnia
Like I said above Bosnia is very small which makes getting around very easy. We had a car for our entire Balkans Vacation but it just sat parked at our accommodations while in Mostar, Bosnia. You definitely do not need a car while you are in the city, most places are walkable. I do recommend having a car if you will be traveling to other countries while on your vacation.
Accommodations in Mostar, Bosnia
Stay at the same Accommodations: Aurelia B&B
We chose Aurelia B&B because it had some of the highest reviews we have ever seen on Booking.com! This place did not disappoint! It was walking distance from downtown, it was beautiful and very clean. Not to mention they grow their own fruits and veggies and use them in the breakfast they cook you in the morning! I highly recommend Aurelia B&B.
Best Places to Eat in Mostar, Bosnia
Thousands of people cross the border from Dubrovnik to Mostar, Bosnia to get a taste of the traditional Bosnian food. There are even guided food tours traveling from other countries to Bosnia to check out the best restaurants. Bosnian food is a mix of Western and Eastern influences and it is closely related to Middle Eastern cuisine. The main traditional dishes include Cevapi, Sogan-Dolma, and Fish. I would recommend people to travel to Bosnia just based on the food alone! I’ve listed our favorites below.
Tima Irma
Website: Tima Irma Website
Address: Onešćukova, Mostar 88000, Bosnia and Herzegovina
This was our absolute favorite place for dinner. Tima Irma is a very well known restaurant for the their meat platters, or in other words Cevapi. Most people go in groups and order the mixed grill. We ordered the mix grill for 4 and it could’ve fed 8. I don’t think I have ever been so full yet so satisfied when I was done eating. The mixed platter had all kinds of meats with vegetables, sauces, and cheese. Please go here, it’s for your own good!
Sadrvan
Website: Sadrvan Website
Address: Jusovina 11, Mostar 88000, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Sadrvan is cute little cafe with outdoor seating. It’s a great place to stop in for a quick lunch and get a taste of the traditional Bosnian cuisine. Most people order the national dish of cevapi with a coffee and some Baklava.
Slasticarna Palma
Website: Slasticarna Palma Website
Address: Porodice Ribar 5, Sarajevo 71000, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Now if you are not absolutely stuffed after a day of eating in Mostar, Bosnia make sure to head to Slasticarna Palma for dessert. They are known for cakes, baklava, and delicious cappuccinos!
Things to do in Mostar, Bosnia
The main reason people go to Mostar, Bosnia is to try the local cuisines and check out the Stari Most Bridge.
Stari Most Bridge
The Stari Most Bridge is a medieval bridge that sits in the center of the city. You will notice locals jumping off this 7o foot bridge in the summer. It’s a 450 year old local tradition for Bosnian men, the men see it as gaining their “manhood”. Definitely watch the locals plunge into the freezing cold water! Locals can pay to jump off the bridge but I definitely do not recommend doing so. People die every year jumping off the bridge.
Things to Do
Other things to do include:
- Shopping
- Kayaking/Canoeing
- Take a historical tour
- Do some sight seeing and check out the trails
Bosnia is full of history and it has a lot of old buildings and museums.
Night Life
The night life in Mostar, Bosnia is very relaxed. It’s more of a beer pub scene. On Sunday night we went to the Black Dog Pub and had a blast! We got there around 8:30PM when the band starting setting up their equipment. We sat at a picnic table out front and had some beers. As the night when on hundreds of people joined us and the band. The pub had mats that people could use to sit on and enjoy the free concert and still order drinks. We saw alot of family and friends. It was a very unique and joyful scene, we really enjoyed our Sunday Night!
